Garden House Boarding Provision

Home from Home

Some young people need more focused support.  This is why the Caldecott School is delighted to have Garden House.  Our 38-week residential boarding provision offers weekday boarding and education for pupils from the age of 7 to 16 years.

Our Primary and Secondary schools are just a short walk from the home. Our school staff provide a great education for the pupils of Garden House.  At the end of the school day, the pupils are met by experienced, dedicated carers from Garden House who continue nurturing and teaching these pupils through the remainder of the day until they start school, the following morning.

Garden House feels like a home from home. You will find a warm, welcoming kitchen where the pupils are taught to prepare healthy food and socialise over a meal.

Our Garden House Residence

The large lounge has comfortable seating and a TV; a great area for resting and socialising.

There is an indoor games room as well as a large garden with climbing frames and a trampoline which enables the pupils to play games, run around and keep fit. In the Games / Art Room, pupils can be creative and develop their skills and talents.

Each pupil has their own bedroom which is furnished with duvet covers of their choice. Some pupils choose to personalise their rooms with belongings brought from home. Once home from school, the pupils sit around and discuss the plans for the evening. The pupils’ opinions and thoughts and ideas are heard and valued. Pupil voice is of utmost importance.

After a busy day at school, the children can choose to play with others or have some quiet time. Whatever they choose to do, staff are on hand if they wish to talk or need any support. Garden House and school staff work closely together and, if any schoolwork needs completing or homework tasks undertaken, staff in Garden House are there to support.

OFSTED

In 2019 OFSTED said: “Residential pupils enjoy their boarding experience, the structure and routines, together with committed staff who enjoy their company, provide a warm, friendly and supportive environment. Residential pupils are seen to be relaxed in the company of staff and there is an ease of communication and mutual respect – pupils report feeling safe and secure living in the boarding.”

OFSTED Report

Just Like Home

Just like home, the pupils may go out shopping after school for some food or to attend a local club or go swimming.

The pupils have use of the extensive grounds of the Caldecott Foundation to go for a run or ride their bikes and scooters. Hythe beach is only a short 15-minute ride, and the Deer Park is within walking distance.

Pupils can visit the cinema or Flip Out (Trampoline Park) or sometimes, for an extra treat, the children will grab a takeaway for supper. Birthdays and Christmas are always celebrated in the home.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum

At school the broad and balanced curriculum is tailored to the pupils’ individual needs to help them reach their full potential. This includes weekly Forest School sessions, lessons where the pupils will learn vocational skills such as Design Technology, Land-based studies and Food Technology. Daily maths and English lessons ensure that pupils have the academic skills needed for future learning or employment.

Careers is studied across the school but in Years 10 and 11 more formal activities such as work experience and Employability studies are included on their timetable thus ensuring that all our pupils are well-prepared for their post-16 placement.

The pupils are also supported by a team of therapists who work closely with the staff from Garden House and the teachers in the school. These include a:

  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Child Psychotherapist
  • Art Therapist
  • Speech and Language Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist

If you would like to discuss a potential placement, please call Karen Norman (Head Teacher) on 07392 082591 or James Coe (Registered Manager of Garden House) on 07392 082573).
